NOH: ASHIKARI
A man and wife have separated after falling on hard times. The man has become a reed cutter, or Ashikari, while his wife has become the nursemaid of a wealthy man’s child. When the wife’s fortunes change for the better she seeks out and is reunited with her husband. |
KYOGEN: NARIAGARI
When a master and servant spend the night at a temple lodging while on pilgrimage a thief steals the master’s sword which has been entrusted to the servant. The thief has put a bamboo cane in place of the sword and the servant tries to explain this strange happening as an example of nariagari, or a metamorphosis. |
NOH: UNRININ
A poetry lover visits Unrin-in, the burial place of author Murasaki Shikibu, after having a dream about poet Ariwara no Narihira. There he meets an old man who reveals that he is, in fact, the ‘Man of Old’ as Narihira was known. Later he appears in his true form and dances. Images from the Tales of Ise and Tale of Genji are interwoven in the evocative noh. |
