KYOGEN: TSUKUZUKUSHI
Two friends go out one spring day to enjoy the countryside and one composes a poem when he sees young tsukushi, field horse tail, shoots. He makes a mistake in the poem, causing his friend to make fun of him. He makes a second mistake in the next poem he composes and his frustration with his friends further laughter leads him to suggest they have a sumo wrestling match.... |
NOH: KURAMA TENGU Hakutoh
On a spring day children of the Heike clan are invited to view the cherry blossoms in the Eastern precincts of Mt. Kurama.One of the group is Ushiwaka, a member of the rival Minamoto clan. A yamabushi mountain ascetic who suddenly joins the group and the Heike children leave. He is in fact, the great tengu goblin of the mountain and he promises to teach Ushiwaka the arts of war to help him defeat his rivals in the future. Later he appears in his true form and does as he has promised. In the Hakutoh variation the tengu is dressed in white, symbolic of his great age, wisdom, and power.
