NOH: MANJU
Learning that his son has simply caused trouble and learned nothing at the temple where he has been sent to study, Manju is so angry that he is ready to kill the boy. When his retainer Nakamitsu stops him, Manju orders Nakamitsu to kill his son in his stead. Not wanting to carry out such an order Nakamitsu doesn't know what to do. While the boy says he is ready to die, Nakamitsu's son, who is in his service, offers himself in place of Manju's son, saying that he is ready to sacrifice himself. Nakamitsu accepts the boy's offer and kills him, allowing Manju's son to escape. Later Manju is reunited with his son and Nakamitsu dances in celebration though he cannot but regret that his own son is not there to see the reconciliation. |
KYOGEN:INABADO
A Man who is unhappy with his bad-tempered hard drinking Wife gets up the courage to send a letter of divorce when she is staying with her parents. He then goes to Inabado Temple where he prays for a new wife. His Wife is furious and finds a way to trick her husband. The Man's prayers are answered, but not in way he anticipated! |
NOH: TAISANPUKUN
A Nobleman who admires cherry blossoms and regrets their short life prays to the god Taisan Pukun, who has stewardship over the lifespan of all living things, to extend it. A Goddess appears and is so charmed by the flowers that she breaks off a branch and takes it back to heaven. Taisan Pukun appears and, after ordering the Goddess to return the blossoms, which she does, also offering a dance, he declares that the life of the blossoms shall be extended three times, from seven to twenty-one days. |
