NOH: SHUNKAN Conspirators against Taira-no-Kiyomori who lead the Heike forces against the Genji, were arrested, some executed, and Shunkan, Naritsune and Yasuyori exiled to Kikai-ga-shima, or Devils’ Island, a small island between the present day southern islands of Kyushu and Okinawa. Later a pardon is granted the exiles except for Shunkan, who collapses in despair as he watches his companions leave, offering him words of encouragement from the boat that has come for them. |
KYOGEN: CHIDORI Servant Taro Kaja is sent to get sake for his Master who already owes the Sake Shop Owner money. Taro Kaja entertains the Sake Shop Owner talking about various events, such as catching plovers (chidori) using a cask of sake as a prop. Finally, having offered a kind of payment through his tales, Taro Kaja runs off home with the cask of sake. |
NOH: TATSUTA The Goddess of Tatsuta, the protector of the maple trees at the Tatsuta Shrine, appears to a Priest and relates poems in praise of the maple leaves on Tatsuta River. Later she appears in her true form and dances in celebration of the autumn colors and people's appreciation of their beauty. |
