NOH: KAYOI KOMACHI
A Priest practicing austerities in northern Kyoto is visited daily by a woman bringing him offerings. She realized from her conversation that she must be the spirit of famed Heian period poet Ono no Komachi. When he prays for her salvation her spirit comes to thank him. Soon after the spirit of her would-be lover Commander Fukakusa also appears and expresses his dissatisfaction with Komachi. He describes the task, which he was unable to fulfill, that she set him of visiting her one hundred nights in succession. Through the witness of the Priest to Fukakusa's suffering both Komachi and the Commander are able to gain enlightenment. |
KYOGEN: MORAI MUKO
A Young Husband and Wife are having some difficulties because the Husband has been drinking and when his Wife objects, angrily sends her home to her Father. The Wife's Father promises to protect his daughter from her Husband. Later, when the Husband apologies for his behavior to his Wife's father she has a change of heart. Her Father tries to get her to think carefully about her choice, but it the end the young couple go off together.... |
NOH: MUTSURA
The Spirit of a Maple Tree at Shomyo-ji in Mutsura near Kamakura appears as a Young Woman to a Priest who is admiring the autumn foliage during his pilgrimage there. She quotes poetry composed in regarding the tree and explains that the tree, able to gain enlightenment because of the poem, vowed never to change color again.
The Spirit appears in the Priest's dreams that night and dances in praise of the Buddhist Law that promises enlightenment to all things. |
