NOH: EGUCHI
A Priest traveling with companions comes to the town of Eguchi and recalls the story of Poet-priest Saigyo's encounter with a courtesan there. The courtesan had dissuaded him from seeking shelter at the inn there, reminding him that he should not cling to the idea of a lodging any more than he should cling to his temporal body as both are transitory. The Priest goes to the grave of the Lady of Eguchi where he meets a woman who is, in fact, the spirit of the lady. Later she appears and reveals that she is the incarnation of Fugen Bosatsu, the bodhisattva of meditation and spiritual training and dances celebrating the transience of the world. |
KYOGEN: YOBIKOE
After servant Taro Kaja has gone missing several days, his Master is angry and after being persuaded by his other servant, Jiro Kaja, to find out what is going on, visits Taro Kaja's house. Taro Kaja, having been warned by Jiro Kaja of their Master's anger, pretends to be out, but when their Master keeps asking about him in various rhythms he gets caught up in the fun. When he comes dancing out he is, of course, scolded by his Master. |
NOH: KOKAJI
The swordsmith Munechika has been ordered by an Imperial Envoy to forge a sword for the Emperor to fulfill a dream oracle.
Concerned that he does not have an assistant to help him, Muniechika goes to the Inari Shrine to pray for guidance. There a youth tells him to have faith and prepare his forge. Later, the fox god of Inari appears and helps Munechika with the task of forging the blade which is then handed over to the Envoy. |
