NOH: IZUTSU "The Wellcurb"
A monk visiting Ariwaradera in Kyoto meets a Young Woman offering water at the grave of Heian poet, Ariwara no Narihira. Later she appears as the spirit of the wife of the poet. She remembers how, as children, they measured their heights leaning on the wellcurb and gazing at their reflections in the water below. She dons the court hat, robe, and ceremonial sword of the poet and dances in nostalgic reverie. |
KYOGEN: HARATATEZU
Two Men who've recently built a shrine near their homes look for a Priest to look after it for them. They find someone who has just recently taken his vows. They ask him about his various skills as a preacher or in reciting sutras. Because he's new in his vocation he doesn't really know anything about such things and starts boasting and making things up. This doesn't sit too well with the Two Men... |
NOH: SHOZON
Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his followers foil a plot against him instigated by Yoritomo, his estranged brother. Shozon, who has come to the capital to kill Yoshitsune, is so skillful in making a statement avowing his innocence that Yoshitsune at first believes him.
However, a servant who checks activities at Shozon's lodgings finds that he is, indeed, preparing to attack Yoshitsune and the group quickly foil the attack. |
