| NOH: AMA, Henjonanshi An "Ama" or Woman Diver, at Shido Bay sacrifices her life to retrieve a jewel stolen at sea by the Dragon King when it was on its way from China to Japan as part of an Imperial dowry. In exchange for her life she asks that her son, born to the court minister who has come for the jewel, to ensure that her son is given rank at court. Many years later the boy comes to the bay to learn about his mother. Her ghost acts out the retrieval of the jewel and her death. Later a Great Dragon King appears and dances in praise of the Lotus Sutra which promises enlightenment to all beings as illustrated by the case of the Dragon King's eight year old daughter who gains enlightenment after briefly taking the form of a man. |
