NOH: GENJI KUYO
The spirit of author Murasaki Shikibu appears to a priest visiting Ishiyama-dera in Shiga prefecture. She asks that he carry out a memorial service for Genji. When the priest asks who she is she identifies herself as the author of the work. She fears that writing fiction is a sin leading readers from reality and the truth. When she dances as an offering, stringing together chapter titles to create a description of the way to enlightenment, the priest is able to persuade her that in fact the story offers a path to freedom from attachments.

KYOGEN: GAN TSUBUTE
A
Daimyo out on a hunting trip just misses the goose he is aiming at and is just going to try another shot with his bow and arrow when a Passerby throws a stone at it, hitting it easily. The Daimyo doesn't want to lose the goose and asks for help from an Arbiter, insisting that the goose is his since he shot at it first. But in the end it's the better shot who runs off with the prize. |
NOH: IKKAKU SENNIN
In India a One-horned Hermit, born of a woman and a deer, has trapped the rain dragons in a cave so that the countryside near Banares suffers from a terrible drought. A Courtesan is sent to seduce him so that he will lose his power over the dragons. She successfully gets him to drink wine, thus causing him to committing the sin of intoxication, and then dances with him. The Hermit's powers gone, the Courtesan and her escort hurry away as the dragons, after a brief battle, escape from the cave, bringing rain with them. |
