NOH: HASHI BENKEI
Loosely based on an incident described in Chapter 3 of the Yoshitsune Chronicle and the otogi zoshi children’s story Hashi Benkei, the Noh describes the first meeting of warrior-priest Benkei and Ushiwakamaru as they encounter each other on Gojo Bridge. Ushiwakamaru is set on gathering a thousand swords as part of a vow. Benkei is beaten by the young boy and becomes his retainer. |
KYOGEN: KUCHI MANE
A Master wants to get rid of an annoying guest, a drunkard who is unpleasant when he has had too much to drink. However his plan to urge him to leave takes an unexpected turn when his servant Taro Kaja insists on imitating (kuchi mane) his orders too closely.... |
NOH: AOI NO UE
A shamaness and then the Priest Kohijiri identify and then exorcise the spirit causing the mysterious illness of Lady Aoi, wife of Prince Genji. Lady Aoi in her sickbed is represented on stage by a robe. The tormenting spirit of Lady Rokujo, humiliated at the Hollyhock Festival by Aoi's servants, finally accepts the saving power of the Buddhist Law and leaves her victim unharmed. |
