NOH: IKUTA ATSUMORI
A Priest has in his charge the young orphaned son of Taira warrior Atsumori. The child has expressed a wish to somehow meet his father, and while praying at Kamo Shrine he has a dream that he should travel to Ikuta. In the evening at a hut in the woods at Ikuta they meet a man who is, in fact, the ghost of Atsumori. He is deeply moved to meet his son, but soon thoughts of the Shura World, where warriors are eternally at battle in the after world, overtake him and he is caught up in memories of the past. As dawn comes he begs for the prayers of his visitors and then vanishes. |
KYOGEN: KURAMA MAIRI
A Master and his servant Taro Kaja are making their yearly pilgrimage to Kurama Shrine. The Master decides to spend the night at the shrine and insists that Taro Kaja keep watch and wake him at dawn. Taro Kaja keeps bothering his Master until he is allowed to sleep, too. Taro Kaja dreams that an old priest visits him and blesses him. When the Master hears this, he wants to be blessed, too. He convinces Taro Kaja to share the blessing an they sing and dance together happily in celebration of the new year. |
NOH: KANAWA
A Woman who has been cast off by her husband prays nightly at Kibune Shrine for vengence. The god takes pity on her and tells her that if she puts an iron trivit, or kanawa, with three burning candles on her head she will be able to achieve her goal. Soon after, her husband, who has remarried, visits the fortune teller Abe no Seimei to have him interpret bad dreams he has had recently. Abe no Seimei tells the husband his life is in danger and sets up an altar to attract the spirit of his former wife so that he can perform an exorcism. The Woman appears and is forced to leave, but vows to return again in the future. |
