NOH: SAIGYOZAKURA
The poet-monk Saigyo, wanting to peace and quiet, orders his servant to close the garden of his hermitage to visitors who he knows will come to view the old cherry tree there when it comes into bloom. Indeed, visitors come and finally persuade Saigyo to share the beauty of the old tree's blossoms with them. Late that night the spirit of the cherry tree, in the form of an old man, appears, persuades Saigyo that it is right for everyone to enjoy the blossoms, and dances. |
KYOGEN: SOUHACHI
A Cook and a Priest have been given orders by their Master to carry out their particular duties while he is gone. In fact the two are new at their jobs and are unsure about what to do. Revealing their uncertainty to each other they find that each has recently retired from the work that the other has now taken up. Happy not to have to try to deceive each other any longer, they exchange jobs. |
NOH: DAIBUTSU KUYO
Heike warrior Kagekiyo learns that his enemy, Minamoto no Yoritomo, will be attending a ceremony for the Great Buddha at Todaiji in Nara. As a defeated warrior, he visits his mother in disguise to say goodbye and then goes to Todaiji himself. He hopes to attack Yoritomo in the disguise of a Shinto priest, but he is found out and forced to flee. Kagekiyo, known as 'the Passionate', is said to have put out his own eyes rather than live with the shame of his clans'
defeat and spent his last days in solitude. |
