| NOH: TSURU KAME The Crane and the Tortoise, representing 1,000 years and 10,000 years of long life respectively, join in the New Year celebration at the court of Emperor Genso of Tang China. After they dance, the Emperor also performs, sharing in the joy of his courtiers as they wish him a peaceful, long reign. |
| KYOGEN: SADOGITSUNE Two Farmers, one from Sado and the other from Echigo, travel together to go to pay their taxes. Sado is a remote island and so the Farmer from Echigo is sure it must be an inconvenient place to live. The Farmer from Sado is put off by being patronized and when he is asked if there are foxes on the island insists that there are, though in fact he doesn't know anything about foxes. A bet about the Sadogitsune or Sado Fox, is placed with the Tax Collector with unexpected consequences... |
NOH: SOSHI ARAI The Heian court assembles at the Seiryo-den Hall to take part in a poetry contest before the Emperor. Among the courtiers are such famous poets as Kuronushi, and Ono-no-Komachi, known as two of the Six Poetic Geniuses of the age, and anthologist Tsurayuki.
Kuronushi, wishing to discredit Komachi, eavesdrops when she composes her poem, and then copies it into a book of poetry so that he can claim it is not original but that she has stolen it. Things look bad for Komachi, but she sees through the ruse. Kuronushi is humiliated, but Komachi insists that they celebrate the harmony poetry brings and dances in celebration. |
