NOH: HACHI NO KI 'The Dwarf Trees'
One snowy evening when the fifth regent of the Kamakura shogunate is traveling in disguise to see the true state of the nation, he stops to ask for lodging at a poor house. The couple who live there have little to give their visitor and, when it becomes very cold, the man brings out his hachi-no-ki or dwarf trees and burns them as firewood. The regent is impressed by this sacrifice. He questions the man and finds that he is a warrior whose lands have been taken from him by a dishonest relative. He says that though he is destitute, if a call to arms should come from Kamakura he would go there at once. Later, a general alarm is sounded at the man goes to Kamakura where is is rewarded by the regent with lands representing each of the trees that were burned to keep him warm when he was in disguise. |
KYOGEN: KAGYU 'The Snail'
A yamabushi, mountain ascetic, stops in a bamboo thicket to take a nap. Taro Kaja has been sent out by his Master to find a snail because he has heard they have properties to ensure longevity. Taro Kaja doesn't know what a snail is and when he discovers the priest asleep is certain he must be a snail because he has a shell and what seem to be horns. The yamabushi decides to have some fun with Taro Kaja and encourages him in his misunderstanding... |
NOH: GENZAI SHICHIMEN
Nichiren, the founder of the Nichiren sect of Buddhism, is performing austerities and praying on Mt. Minobu when a woman appears. In answer to his questions, she explains that she is seeking enlightenment. He assures her that the Lotus Sutra offers enlightenment to all beings. Later she appears as her true self, a dragon living in Shichimen Pond, to express her thanks for being able to achieve enlightenment. She promises to guard the sacred spot and dances. This Noh is performed only by the Kongo and Kanze schools and features an unusual costume change in the second half when the woman appears first as a dragon and then is transformed on stage into a heavenly maiden. |
