PERFORMANCE CELEBRATING THE 10th ANNIVERSARY OF THE OPENING OF THE KONGO THEATRE
OKINA: A ritual always performed at the start of a new year or other auspicious occasions, this year it features the Grand Master and his son in a celebration of long life and prosperity. This shared celebration involves all Noh performers in a unique experience of an early Noh tradition.
NOH: HAGOROMO Fisherman Hakuryo discovers a beautiful feather robe and is determined to take it home to the village elders to keep as a treasure. He is stopped by a Heavenly Being who explains that she needs the robe to return to her home in the moon. He promises to return it if she will show him dances of the moon which she agrees to do. When she says she needs her robe to dance Hakuryo refuses to give it back, saying that he fears she will fly away without showing him the dances as she has promised. 'In Heaven there is no deceit,' she admonishes him and, ashamed at having doubted her, Hakuryo gives back the robe. She dances, bestows treasures of love and compassion on the world, and then returns to her home in the moon.
KYOGEN: KITSUNEZUKA The Master sends his two servants Taro and Jiro Kaja out to his fields at Kitsunezaka, or Fox Mound, to chase birds away from the rice. They work hard at chasing birds, but also start to talk about foxes. Foxes are known as tricksters that can change shape and they wonder what they would do if they actually met a fox. Their Master visits the field later with some sake for them, but they wonder if he might not be a fox instead....
NOH: SHAKKYO Jakujo Hoshi, a learned priest and poet, is visiting temples in China and India. At Mt. Shoryo in China he comes to a narrow stone bridge, or shakkyo, over a deep ravine. A Young Boy appears and explains that the bridge leads to the paradise of Monju, the bodhisattva of wisdom and meditation, and is a very difficult one to cross, even for a saintly person such as the priest. He urges Jakujo to wait there, saying that he will see a marvelous sight. Later a Lion, one of the attendant beings of Monju, appears and dances among the peony blossoms on the bridge. |
