NOH: YOKI-HI
The Chinese emperor Hsuan Tsung, Genso in Japanese, grieves at the loss of his consort, Yang Kuei-fei, or Yoki-Hi, and sends a Taoist Wizard to find her. The Wizard's journey takes him to the land of the Immortals where he finds Yoki-Hi languishing in her palace. Yoki-Hi reveals vows she shared with the emperor and dances in a nostaligic reverie before giving the Wizard an ornamental comb to take back to the emperor, a sign of her enduring love. |
KYOGEN: HAGI DAIMYO
A Daimyo wants to take in the sights while he visits the city and is advised by his servant Taro Kaja to visit a garden where the bush clover, or hagi, are in bloom. The price of admission to the garden is a poem in its praise. Taro Kaja does his best to teach the Daimyo a poem and ways to remember it based on visual clues in the garden. Unfortunately the Daimyo gets nervous and can't remember what he's been told leading to an embarrassing situation... |
NOH: HOUSO
The prosperous and peaceful reign of Gi no Buntei, emperor of China, is being celebrated, drawing many visitors from far and wide. One is an immortal who calls himself Housu and brings an elixir for the emperor. On being questioned he explains that 700 years ago he committed the crime of stepping over the pillow of the emperor he served and was exiled to the wilds of Mt. Tekken. The act of copying on to chrysanthemum leaves the verses from the Lotus Sutra that the emperor had compassionately taught him at the time of his exile turned dew that fell from them into the stream by his hut into an elixir. The present emperor vows to visit this miraculous hermitage and later Houso dances for him there. This Noh, a sequel to the Noh MAKURA JIDO, in which the exiled youth is discovered to have become an immortal, is performed only by the Kongo school of Noh. |
