NOH: UROKO-GATA 'The Snake-scale Banner'
Military leader Hojo Tokimasa goes to Enoshima to pray at the Benten Shrine there for a banner to take into battle. A Woman comes up to him unexpectedly and promises that his prayers will be answered as it is known that he is a devote and honorable man. Later, the goddess Benzaiten appears and presents him with a banner with a device of three snake scales which she promises will protect him from his enemies, and then dances in his honor. |
KYOGEN: TACHI UBAI 'Stealing a Sword'
The Master and his Servant Taro Kaja see a handsome long sword a Passerby is wearing and when the Master admires it Taro Kaja offers to steal it. As can be expected, this leads to all kinds of mischief and in the end it is Taro Kaja and his Master who are running after the Passerby crying 'Thief!' as he makes off with the Master's sword.... |
NOH: MATSUKAZE 'Pine Winds'
A Priest visiting Suma Bay prays there for two fishergirls, Matsukaze and Murasame, who were companions th the poet Ariwara no Yukihira when he was exiled there long ago. The spirits of the two women appear in the moonlight, drawing salt water to make salt as they did in the past. They recall Yukihira and especially Matsukaze longs for days gone by. She dons the robe and hat the two sisters have as a keepsake and she dances, imaging the pine tree she sees before her is the poet returned to them. Finally dawn comes and the Priest wakens to the sound of the wind murmuring in the pines. |
