NOH: HAKU RAKUTEN The Chinese poet Po Chu-i (Haku Rakuten in Japanese) comes to Japan to find out how clever the Japanese are. He meets an old fisherman who not only knows who he is, but also composes a superior poem when challenged by the Chinese poet. The old fisherman is, in fact, Sumiyoshi Myojin, a god associated with poetry. He later appears and dances for his visitor in celebration of the virtues of poetry and also promises to continue to watch over the land of Japan and its people. He then calls up a wind and sends the Chinese poet back to his homeland.
KYOGEN: UOZEKKYO (The Fish Sermon) A Wealthy Man has built a memorial for his father who has died. He wants to have a dedication service performed, and goes to a temple to request the service. Only the Acolyte, who is looking after things, is there, but he agrees to perform the service. He's never done one before, and doesn’t know what to say. He comes from a fishing village and knows a lot of names and terms relating to fish so he decides to string them together in something that will sound like a sermon. He does this quite cleverly, but then the Wealthy Man realizes that ‘something fishy’ is going on….
NOH: HIBARI-YAMA The young daughter of court noble Fujiwara no Toyonari, slandered by her stepmother, has been taken to the mountains by a retainer to be killed there. He cannot bring himself to kill the girl and instead builds a hut for her where she now lives in hiding with her nurse. The nurse goes to the village and sells flowers there in order to support them. Toyonari is on a hunting trip in the mountains when he meets her by chance. He has, in fact, learned that his judgement of his daughter has been too harsh and regrets his orders to have her killed. He is overjoyed to learn that she is alive and father and daughter are reunited.
