| NOH: UKON Shinto Priests visiting the capital go to the riding grounds of Ukon-no-baba to view the cherry blossoms. They encounter Women who are also cherry blossom viewing. They quote poems by Ariwara no Narihira recorded in an episode in the Tales of Ise in which two strangers meet there and are attracted to each other. The leader of the women reveals that she is, in fact, the Goddess of Cherry Blossoms. Later that night she appears in her true form. She dances for the Priests before disappearing with the coming of the dawn. |
| KYOGEN: FUNE FUNA The Master and his servant Taro Kaja are on an outing when they come to a place where they must cross a river by boat. This leads to an argument about the correct way to pronounce words related to boats since while fune is a boat, in a compound word such as funabito, boatman, the final e changes to an a. The Master and Taro Kaja think of conflicting examples with the clever Taro Kaja winning out in the end as usual! |
NOH: MORIHISA In the days of civil strife described in the Tale of the Heike, Morihisa, a warrior of the Taira clan, is captured and taken to Kamakura to be sentenced by the ruler, Minamoto no Yoritomo. A devotee of the Bodhisattva Kannon, he prays for justice and the equanimity to accept his fate. He discusses the power of the sutras with his captor, Tsuchiya. Morihisa is sentenced to death and lead to the execution grounds, but when he is to carry out the order the executioner drops his raised sword, his eyes dazzled by the sutra scroll Morihisa holds. Because Yoritomo has had a dream oracle that Morihisa will be miraculously saved, he is set free. Morihisa is then given wine and dances to celebrate Yoritomo's benevolence.
