| NOH: EBIRA 'The Quiver' A Priest on pilgrimage meets a Man in the forest of Ikuta who tells him in detail about a famous plum tree there. The Man is, in fact, the spirit of Minamoto warrior Kajiwara Kagesue. He later appears as he was in the past. He describes how he put a branch of plum blossoms in his quiver as his emblem when he rode into battle, and acts out his part in the fighting. He enacts his suffering in the afterlife, asks for the Priest to pray for him, and disappears as dawn comes. |
| KYOGEN: ONIGAWARA A Daimyo and his Servant are checking on details of temple architecture in the capital in order to build something similar in their home town. The Daimyo feels the demon tiles, or onigawara, at the ends of the roof remind him of someone...his wife! He starts to feel homesick and cry but then his Servant reminds him he will see his wife again soon and should be laughing. They go off together happily. |
NOH: ZEGAI Hakutoh After destroying the faith of the monks in temples in China the great tengu mountain demon Zegai comes to Japan to do the same. Appearing first in the guise of a mountain ascetic, he consults with the Japanese tengu, Taro-bo, about how to attack the priests of Mt. Hiei in the capital. Zegai then appears in his true tengu form and tries to confound the priests by arguing that good and evil are one and the same. However he is no match for the priests' defense and is defeated and forced to leave Japan.
